Emerging Technologies to Counteract the Effects Induced by the Turbulent Flows of Fluid Environments - CONTUR

COMPONENT PROJECT 2
Emergent Anti-Turbulence Strategies: Tests Performed in the Wind Tunnel

STAGE 4: The final phase of high spectral resolution LIDAR technology validation for CAT events and also of wind tunnel tests to counteract the effects of turbulence and gusts.
Period of implementation: 01.01.2021 - 30.06.2021.
Activities
On April 7, 2021 it was organized a group meeting as a telecon. This was aimed at discussing the level of implementation for the stage 4 activities of component project 2 - CONTUR. The meeting was attended by Dr. Ioan Ursu (INCAS - National Institute for Aerospace Research "ELIE CARAFOLI" - partner institution P3), Professor Marius Stoia (University Politehnica of Bucharest - partner institution P1), Associated Professor Mihnea Sandu (Technical University of Civil Engineering of Bucharest - partner institution P7), Associated Professor Mihai Lungu (University of Craiova - partner institution P6) and Dr. Aurelian Andrei Radu (Institute of Space Science - the coordinating institution of the CONTUR project CO).

The telecon agenda included the following items:

  • opening remarks and management elements for the CONTUR project (Dr. Aurelian Andrei Radu)

  • a presentation of the current status of implementation for the stage 4 technic and scientific activities of the component project 2 - CONTUR (Dr. Ioan Ursu)

  • recommendations to optimize the implementation of the CONTUR project timeline activities (contributions from all attendees).

STAGE 3: The initial phase of high spectral resolution LIDAR technology validation for CAT events and also of wind tunnel tests to counteract the effects of turbulence and gusts.
Period of implementation: 01.01.2020 - 31.12.2020.
Activities
The activities of the 3rd stage of Component Project 2 - CONTUR, have been further done over the current year under the well-known pandemic conditions. Despite these unavoidable difficulties, the following accomplishments are to be mentioned:

  • a scientific article that had been submitted for review last year, was published at the beginning of this year - I. Ursu, D. Enciu, G. Tecuceanu (2019), Equilibrium stability of a nonlinear structural switching system with actuator delay, Journal of the Franklin Institute, 2020-3 DOI: 10.1016/j.jfranklin.2020.02.035, WoS, IF 4.036. The article is available for download here.
  • another scientific article - I. Ursu, G. Tecuceanu, D. Enciu, A. Toader, and D. D. Ion Guta, Active robust control for wing vibrations attenuation - is currently under review for Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers - Part G: Journal of Aerospace Engineering, WoS, IF 1.244. The results within the article can be directly used in the synthesis of the control law to control the vibrations and implicitly the wing model's flutter, in a wind tunnel.
  • a mathematical model has been elaborated for an electric actuator driving to be used for the numerical simulations preliminary to control synthesis.
STAGE 2: Estimation of the appearance conditions and the criteria for identifying the CAT phenomena and the physical system CONTUR: execution, integration and implementation anti-turbulence strategies for tests performed in the aerodynamic tunnel.
Period of implementation: 01.01.2019 - 31.12.2019.
Activities
On 17.09.2019, a work meeting took place at ISS headquarters, dedicated to the project component P2-CONTUR. The meeting's agenda included the following points:
1. information regarding the testing campaigns done at our UTCB partners' headquarters;
2. information regarding the work visits done for the project component P2-CONTUR up till the meeting date;
3. the degree of accomplishment of the activities related to stage 2 (December 2019) implemented to the project component P2, of the complex project CONTUR;
4. evaluation of the development process of the planned deliverables;
5. optimization of the human resources use for each separate activity.

During August 2019, a testing campaign took place at the Tech University of Constructions, Bucharest (UTCB), regarding the specific implementation activities for the 2nd stage. A general presentation of this campaign is described in the report below.

STAGE 1: Preliminary studies on the CAT events and the components of the CONTUR system: basic concepts, mathematical modelling, optimization, numerical simulations, design.
Period of implementation: March 31, 2018 - December 31, 2018.
Activities

On Thursday May 24th, 2018, a kick-off meeting dedicated to the elaboration of an implementation strategy for this component project took place at the headquarters of INCAS - National Institute for Aerospace Research "Elie Carafoli" (the coordinating institution of the component project 2). The action items plan framed during this session included the following major aspects: the evaluation of constructive solutions for the turbulence and gusts generator (GTR), optimizing procedures for turbulence generation at large scales and high intensities, performing measurements in the wind tunnel of the Technical University of Civil Engineering of Bucharest (UTCB) in order to evaluate the turbulence generating parameters, the GTR design and the elaboration of the performance criteria, the physical model of aileron elastic wing, laboratory tests of the piezoelectric actuator to optimize its output in load behavior, the development of an alternative solution for the large bandwidth electric trustor, the development of classical and emergent strategies for the vibration damping in the presence of turbulence: the receptance method, the poles allocated method, the adaptive control, delayed systems as well as the dissemination of the results on scientific conferences and workshops. A couple of photos from this meeting are included underneath.
