Project description

The DiPNE Project- "Study of diffractive processes in interactions of 1-4 GeV ions with nuclear emulsion and applications in astrophysics" is in agreement with the main scope of the IDEAS Programme - "Exploratory Research Program” - to promote basic scientific research, interdisciplinary and/or exploratory in Romania and takes into account the general objective of the competitively increase of the Romanian scientific research, in particular in the space research field.
From the scientific point of view this project belongs to the PE Domain of expertise - "MATHEMATICS, PHYSICAL SCIENCES, INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION, ENGINEERING, UNIVERSE AND EARTH SCIENCES", the PE2 Subdomain - "Fundamental constituents of matter: particle, nuclear, plasma, atomic, molecular, gas, and optical physics", having as Main Research Area - "PE2-3: Nuclear Physics” and Secondary Research Areas - "PE2-2: Particle Physics" & "PE2-4: Nuclear Astrophysics".
Investigation of ultra-peripheral diffractive interactions of 16O, 22Ne, 28Si, 32S, 56Fe nuclei at 1 - 3.7 GeV with nuclear emulsion is the main goal of this project. The detector which will be used is nuclear emulsion because it can offer the posibility to study the interactions in 4π with registration of all traces on a wide range of energies and with a very good spatial resolutions of 0.5 microns which has not been achieved by any detector until now.
The main objective is to study the nuclear structure and clusterisation by means of multiplicity, rapidity and transversal momentum distributions. Until now there was no such investigations of these nuclei at the indicated energies. Again, detailed simulations of these specific interactions will be performed for the first time. Using Monte Carlo codes we will reproduce experimental data for various projectile nuclei, calculate different physical quantities requested by identification of diffractive dissociation processes by means of models implemented in simulation codes, validate the simulations on existing real data and make some interesting predictions for interactions of other type of nuclei and at different energies.
By comparising experimental data with results from simulations we can check among other the selection criteria, cross-sections or the probability of different fragmentation channels. Obtained data will might be used in applications for nuclear physics, cosmic radiations and stellar nucleosynthesis processes.
